Mt. Ascutney is a real gem of a hike and the Brownsville Trail is a great way to do it. The parking lot at the trail head accommodates about a dozen cars. There are a couple very pretty waterfalls on the trail (not as big as the Cascades, but nice). The old quarrying equipment that lies around the trail is a lot of fun to see and lets you imagine what working on the side of the mountain was like.
This is a great trail up Mt Ascutney for quick exercise or views. There is a short steep section at the very beginning and then it is an easy walk up an old logging road to the first views. This is a good spot to stop with little ones. It is the site of an very old granite quarry and there are still remnants of the cranes and the ore car tracks. Also, excellent views of the CT River and valley. This is nice place to hang out and scrabble around rocks and look at views. The next section up is more rugged hiking though not difficult for most in average health. Distances and times are listed on a sign at the beginning of the trail. The views get better and better as you climb up. There is even a lookout tower at the top that offers amazing 360 degree views of the White and Green Mountains. Take a Hike.
This trail is not an easy hike, but well worth the effort. The views all along the way are fantastic and if youneed to rest there are plenty of places to do that
