Hiked the Hang Glider Trail to West Peak, then on to the Summit. Climbed the Observation Tower and enjoyed the stunning vistas. Breathtaking views. Returned via the Slab Trail. Be sure to carry your cell phone, and put the Park Ranger phone # before hiking. I would also recommend a whistle and plenty of water. Elevation at top is 3,144 feet. Plenty of roots, rock slabs and loose gravel. Dress appropriately.
Went there to see the view and decided to hike to the summit. The trail is gorgeous. Wear proper footwear, not sandals. The hike was marvelous, tree covered, rocky. Went to the tower. Great views. Ample parking. Bring water.
My boyfriend and I stopped here to begin our trip to Vermont. We drove up the summit road and then hiked the rest of the way. The hike was manageable, especially for the both of us who aren't experienced hikers (we hike 3-5 times per year). The views were beautiful, even on a slightly foggy day. I would say a must see on the way to or back from Woodstock or the White River Junction Area.
We loved the hiking - four great trails to the top, we did Weatherfield Trail. Make sure you go to the top of the tower at the summit to see all of the mountains for miles around.
Drive or hike, but please, go to the summit of this mountain...OH...and take the camera! On a clear day, you will be treated to vistas that are exceptional. And yes, my Vette loved it...LOL.
The ride up to the summit is beautiful but once at the top the views are amazing. A big "wow" effect. Ranger Mike gave us an extensive and interesting lecture on the history of the area.
We are experienced hikers, and it took us about four hours to get to the summit. The views were incredible, with various waterfalls along the way. This was a lifetime experience. Just give yourself enough time!
We hiked up the Weathersfield Trail with easy access off Rt 131 and really enjoyed a workout on a 88 degree day. Thankfully Subway was open at the top so our BMT went down easy after getting all the heavy lifting done on the way up. Just short of 3 mi and a 2000' elevation gain makes this trail a good prep trail for more serious hikers and doable for the less adventurous. We did not see a lot of folks out, but that enhanced a quiet walk until we were coming down and passed a group of adult males with radio-controlled toys "climbing" to the summit from the parking area. Perhaps the weirdest thing I've seen on a trail in a long time. The view from the off-summit observation tower is excellent and especially nice that the developers put out nice photo interpretative maps to name and locate the different peaks you are looking at all around you. Very nice to see Monadnock and a glimpse of the Whites, along with so many others. Good condition hikers should be up in at least 2.25 hours, but families with small kids or dogs should allow for 3 hrs each way. Truly worth the effort on a nice day!
We originally weren't going to stop, but it was on the way, so be decided to go, and I am so glad we did. $3pp was well worth it. Nice paved road to observation areas and then up to the trails. was a great hike and the observation deck was worth the hike. It took 40 minutes up and back to the parking lot. We took the slab route, was alittle challenging but fun. Amazing view at the top!
I live right near this huge mountain. Great view of the area. I never get tired of driving up the winding road. Highest spot in the area.
There are hikes of an hour to a day.The longest trails include the Windsor Trail and the Weathersfield Trail.Get a map from the State Park ranger. We mapped out a circuit including the summit from the parking lot at the top end of the road.It was sufficiently challenging. Not recommended for young or the feeble.Wear sturdy footgear and bring hiking poles.Bring a map and water."If you always know where you are you won't be lost."
Drove up to the top car park with one of my sons to walk the 0.7 miles to the top. As we started the walk it was easy but got harder as we went along and the short journey took longer than expected and seemed more than the distance stated. We enjoyed the walk though and the views are great up there, we came down the alternative route via the hang glider trail. Make sure you've got the right footwear on and bring a drink with you.
There is an auto road you can take to top and then walk around but I hiked up from the Weathersfield trailhead. It was 2.9 miles to the summit. This route passes by two waterfalls. They weren't flowing too much since it is summer but still cool. Depending on time of year could be slippery so be careful in that area. The hike itself had a few great openings to see the view while going up. It is rocky and boulder path to follow and nothing too steep where had to scramble with hands. The view from summit is beautiful but make sure to climb the lookout tower. Breathtaking panoramic views!
$3 per person is a steal for the experience you'll gain from this short mountain road drive and countless number of hikes. Take a short trip up the Summit Trail to a well maintained observation tower with views of the vast Vermont and New Hampshire landscape. Wonderful photo opportunities and even the chance to see some wildlife (a juvenile bear was spotted on the way down the mountain during this trip).
Trails are available to walk from the base to the top. For those less adventuresome a paved road leads from the base (off the Back Mountain Rd) to a parking lot on top. From here is a trail(s) that leads to the lookout tower and various other scenic view areas, looking down on nearby Windsor, the Connecticut River and the Windsor-Cornish Covered Bridge. The trail is about a mile long or less and is well-marked.
