hancock historical museum

This museum is a historic cornucopia activities and displays. Lots of unique material related to the community. Emphasis is on the gas boom years 1880s-90s. They are doing really serious archival work. My father, a historian, says he has visited a lot of other small town museums and Findlay's is head and shoulders above them all.

Our tour guide was nice and very informative. Beautiful house! Easy to get to, good off street parking. Allow at 1 hour to see everything. Cost was a little expensive, but probably costs a lot to maintain!

Right away, I'll admit I am a history buff. I like museums and historic homes. I have been to the Hancock County Historical Museum many times,and I think it is worth a visit for anyone with an interest in Northwest Ohio history, particularly in Findlay, Ohio, but it does have some problems. In the house, the rooms are set up with typical furnishings of the period. Nothing really unique except the corner cupboard in the partially furnished kitchen, which has cans and boxes from the era. The cabin enables kids to go upstairs and see what the loft would have looked like if it had been their bedroom. There is a car which is unique for its rarity and the fact that it was built here. Two other houses were moved to the site, a farmhouse and a small house with unusual architecture has a couple of furnished rooms. The last time I was there, neither was open, and I hadn't heard anything about them being opened since then.Sadly, the museum itself is dark and uninviting. The displays are random, and it is hard work to figure out their significance. There is a display case of Findlay glass, an old printing press, and a story about some Civil War heroes from the area. A few artifacts from bygone Findlay manufacturers are here. It is impossible to keep children or husbands focused, they ran through the entire complex in about 35 minutes.The schoolhouse mentioned in other reviews is rarely open, and it is six miles from the downtown museum. Maybe you can find a special event to attend and see it all at once.

The Hancock Historical Museum is a wonderful place to live the past of Hancock County. It's campus includes a log cabin, three homes from different eras, agriculture barn, transportation displays including two Grant cars, Buckeye Traction Ditcher, an Adams truck, fire truck, tractor, airplane, Indian motorcycle. In the exhibit room displays are rotated at times but include a bathtub from the battleship Maine, Civil War uniforms, memorabilia from businesses in the area, etc. There is an archival department in which you may research people and events. The gift shop has a large collection of Findlay Glass available for purchase. At a separate location is the Little Red Schoolhouse and the Riverside Train (a small scale train that was a ride at Riverside Park for many years). You can spend as little as an hour and as much as four or five hours depending on your interest in the past. So much to see. The Museum is located at 422 West Sandusky Street in Findlay, OH.
