Great museum about Tom Mix. I wasn't expecting anything this good, so I was pleasantly surprised. Our tour guide was extremely knowledgable and you could tell she was genuinely interested in the very interesting person. There are many artifacts and even a short documentary to watch and then you can wrap it up with a trip through the gift shop. Very enjoyable afternoon spent there. No fee, but donation.
It was amazing to see all the things they had of his. Being a maker of bits and spurs and belt buckles it had me in wide eyed to look at the items he use in the movies and real life. It's a go seer.
Yep, the Tom Mix museum is a nice small museum about an early American film star. He actually was the sheriff in Dewey for a while, as well as a bartender in Guthrie and a cow hand, but what is really great about visiting the Tom Mix museum is Main Street. From 1-75, all the way up Main Street to the museum, are some of the greatest antique stores in the state, Oklahoma has it's antique havens, like Guthrie or Jenks...but it is the little towns with their hidden shops that often offer the greatest surprises. Give it a try some day...oh, and right across from the Tom Mix Museum, is a Haunted Victorian Hotel. Now how's that for an afternoon trip?
Did not realize he was actually in law enforcement. Also didn't realize he was quite the rascal he was. Probably the thing I knew least was the fact the he died from being hit in the head with a trunk when he stopped suddenly while driving.
This is an interesting collection of Tom Nix memorabilia. They have done a decent job of displaying the artifacts. You can easily see the museum in 30 minutes, but you also get the opportunity to watch a full movie in their theatre.
Terrific museum. Has virtually all of his possessions at the time of his death, including the suitcase that hit him in the head and caused his death. Very nice documentary on his life, just ask them to start the movie when you're ready to watch it. We recommend it.
The Tom Mix Museum is an elegant effort by the Oklahoma State Historical Society to portray the life of one of the early 20th Century movie heroes, Tom Mix. Tucked away in Dewey OK, it is located in an old store which is deceptively large. Mix's memorabilia is well displayed along two corridors with a short biographical video showing in a purpose built "theater" at the rear of the museum area. It is managed by a local group and their pride in both the man and the museum is evident. When we were there we were given an excellent introduction by the person on duty, and despite knowing very little about Tom Mix, we found his story to be quite interesting and deserving of a museum. The displays will be of interest to adults and kids alike and the ubiquitous gift shop contains a large array of souvenirs. There is no admission fee, but there is a donation spot near the exit.
