We booked a duck and goose hunt with ROE Outfitters in late November. We specifically said ducks and geese when we booked the hunt. The night we arrived in K-Falls, Darren called us and made reference to hunting teal. We kinda thought he was joking, we didn't drive 200 miles to blast a few teal early in the morning. We agreed to meet at the hotel at 4 am. Darren Roe arrived on schedule and said that we should get some early shots at teal and may have shots at bigger ducks too, however, he said many people passed up the early shots and were sorry they did later. We said we really wanted bigger ducks and / or geese, not just teal. Well, we drove to the field and upon arriving, Darren called off the hunt and said we would not be happy. He did not have goose decoys and was not prepared for a different hunt. We could either cancel for a later date or regroup at noon to go for bigger ducks and geese. After the expense to come we decided to regroup at noon. Well, we wasted the next 7 1/2 hours and regrouped at noon to find we still had to get out to the field and still had to put out the decoys. Darren took off in the 4 wheeler and said to follow him out - did not say to drive or walk. Long story short we were finally set up to hunt at 1 pm. We got a few ducks and Darren is good at calling, but we were really disappointed at wasting over 7 hours of out time for a mediocre hunt. Why not start hunting at 7 am after getting the decoys. We did not feel a whole lot of effort to make it a good hunt. If you plan to hunt with ROE outfitters, make sure you understand what you will be getting for your money. We expected much more than we received.
I took this trip on the Rogue River in early August 2014. Forest fires surrounded the area and actually caused the trip to be changed to the Rouge River. It was supposed to be the Klamath River. 5 stars for not canceling the trip altogether. The guides knew the water we would be on was pretty mellow and so each of the 3 rafts had a fishing pole brought along to do some fly fishing. We each took turns casting/learning to cast for some. 5 stars for getting part fishing and part rafting trip for one price. After the trip we ate. The guides brought salsa and chips and watermelon. Great combination! Another 5 stars. The only reason I gave 4 stars is for the followings: 1. I was a solo traveler and was actually trying to book a hiking or kayaking trip. Their website does not state that there must be 4 people or more in order to arrange an adventure and so it was disappointing to find out that in order to do one I would have had to pay the cost of 4 people. I totally understand that it needs to be profitable for them, but I kinda chose to visit Klamath Falls to visit Crater Lake and to be able to do some of those other trips as well. The only reason I was able to do the rafting trip was because there was allready a large group scheduled to go. Overall a great experience though! Thanks Daren Roe!
We took the "all day" Wood River guided kayaking trip down the Wood River. We had a wonderful time and the young guide was very knowledgable and competent. The Wood River is beautiful, especially at the headwaters start of the trip. This float is not as advertised to us; a nature river float. Instead its an aggressive river paddle that demands some paddling skill and stamina. We were in constant danger of running aground. The river bed is full of very uneven gravel spread in somewhat unpredictable patterns, and a share of submerged log hazards. The current is swift. Forget nature watching except for short times of feeling safe enough to raise the binoculars. But enjoy the challenge of finessing the kayak through the hazards and you have a fun experience similar to "whitewater for advanced beginners". The web site for Roe Outfitters is not your friend. These people are busy outdoor people and web sites are for office types. Call ahead and discuss your needs. If the office is empty, try again. They have the equipment and knowledgable staff to design a fun day of outdoor adventure. Wood River was also advertised as "all day" but we were done by 2:00. Okay, could not have paddle too much longer anyway.
Roe outfitter has recently added the use of paddle boards to their already excellent selection of outdoor activities. At first I was hesitant about paddle boarding because I have horrible balance. In the end I absolutely loved it! It is a fun and easy family activity, a unique change from the other outdoor activities. It's a great and inexpensive way to get active and enjoy the beautiful outdoors of Oregon. I would highly suggest it to anyone looking for a fun family outing!
We had a great time; the staff was all so helpful and fun.Want to say that Rose, Logan and Brandon had been great. We will defiantly return for another trip this time full day.Thank-You all ...
My husband and I fished two rivers with Darren; the Keno Section of the Klamath and the Williamson, and it was a highlight of our life to be able to access those wonderful fisheries. Darren is an expert guide; he knows the water like the back of his hand and when we followed his instructions we were well rewarded...lots of big wild rainbows. We also had the fun of shooting some rapids as an added dividend, always knowing that Darren would handle the raft expertly. And we loved the scarcity of other fishermen; so many places have lots of good fish, but also lots of rods. We felt like we were the only ones in this beautiful remote location. My husband and I are in our 80s, but if God is willing we'll be back to the Roe Outfitters.
I recently completed my 3rd year of "Sage Rat" (Belding Ground Squirrel) hunting with Darren Roe of Roe Outfitters in Klamath Falls, OR. We had the experience of a lifetime getting into a field that had never been hunted. In the first two hours of our hunt I alone went through 300 rounds of ammunition, missing only a hand full of "Rats" in this Southern Oregon Varmint Extermination Area. Darren and his wife Jennifer are always very friendly and helpful in getting our trip planned and will even set up lodging for you. Darren also has really good equipment. Hunting is from a trailered double decker shooting platform with outrigger stabilizers. There are two positions on both levels. The platforms can be removed from the trailer and placed on the ground as well for more variable shooting positions. But there is no hiding in the grass for the Sage Rats from the elevated trailer. Bring your own weapons (all of them for more fun), plenty of ammunition and a lunch, Darren provides the logistics and expertise. I had two of my young grandsons with me, one was his very first hunting trip. Darren was very helpful in giving the youngest boy plenty of help freeing me up to do lots of shooting and provided a safe hunt that was fantastic. I recommend this guides service for plenty of shooting fun. We already have next years trip set up.
My husband has fished the Klamath River (below Keno Dam) several times with Roe Outfitters. Darren is the only guide offering this stretch of the Klamath, and it's a technically difficult stretch to drift - lots of whitewater with big boulders. Roe is very adept at safely negotiating the river while getting my husband in the right spots to catch nice rainbow trout. His knowledge of the bug hatches and good selection of flies from their shop always produce a successful trip.Darren's patience and generous sharing of knowledge is impressive. We have never had problems or 'attitude' with ANY of the staff from Roe's. Jenifer's always helpful in scheduling to my husband's convenience and everyone I've met there has been capable, positive and polite. My husband has referred several fishing friends to this outfit (which he wouldn't do if they weren't good) - so far everyone's been impressed. They also like the fact they get a FULL day of fishing - no shortcuts / no shortcomings.
Booked 1/2 day rafting on the Rogue. I was told more people would sign up and we would go. Later in the week they called back to say we could switch to a half day on the Klamath. I was told it was comparable to the Rogue trip. What a disappointment. There was one class two rapid and not much more. Also, this was the first time I've been rafting where NO pictures were taken of us on the river. I will say our guides were great but I am so sorry I didn't book with Noah's rafting.
During the July time of year, the Williamson River was excellent. (don't go on 4th of July weekend). Caught a nice 30 inch rainbow. The water level on the Wood wasn't right, so we didn't fish it. The Rogue wasn't holding big fish at that time (too early in the year). Mr Roe and his wife Jennifer were very accomodating. They put us up in the Running Y which was very nice. Would go back.
We shot ducks and geese at Klamath refuge with Mr. Rowe. He did show up promptly and to be fair, it did freeze overnight, which made the hunting challenging. This is NOT a review about the hunting success, since that is always subject to issues that are often beyond the guide's control. However, Mr. Rowe was not very friendly, seemed more interested in getting us out and back as quickly as possible and getting paid in full. We had two experienced hunters and one novice with us and Mr. Rowe was just not very friendly and actually ridiculed a mistake by the novice hunter (dropped some shells in the boat, making a loud noise that scared some geese away). Overall, just not a positive experience. Other guide services we have used were more congenial, more encouraging, teaching and providing local hunting tips (we were visiting from California). We hardly shot any birds, but again, that's not all Mr. Rowe's fault. But when we left the hunt, I was hoping that we would get some sort of consideration, something like "Come on back up and get 10% off your next hunt since this one was not that good for you" - something to leave us with a positive taste in our mouth. Didn't happen.Would not recommend. There's plenty of better services available...without the attitude.
