Rented a car, picked up lunch and had a wonderful afternoon at Valley of Fire State park. Easy drive from Vegas, friendly park staff. Clean restrooms at nearly all of the scenic points as well as picnic facilities. Admission to park was $10 per car, and well worth it to enjoy the beauty of the area. Nice visitor center. Wonderful break from the craziness of Vegas.
Everything about this park is worth a day trip. The rock formations and hiking trails, driving the new roads to the long range vistas of the mountains in the distance. My favorite site on their map is the sitting elephant. Really he's worth the hike even in the heat. Everything was though really. Truly an excellent state park and a great move by Nevada to make it its first!
Rode side by side with our riding club. Was awed by the scenery! A few challenging trails. A must do sand dunes!
A very good trip outside of Las Vegas. You will have to pay State Park fees.Excellent rock formations an great places to picnic an hike.
This was a great day trip! Easy hikes, beautiful scenery, and "different." We stopped at the visitor center where they kindly showed us where to stop/hike and what to see. $10 park fee must be paid in cash - sortof an "honor system."
What a great place! We rented a car and spent a few hours driving and hiking through the canyons. Very scenic and we went to the gift shop and purchased plenty of souvenirs.
This is a little bit of a drive through boring arid country-side (just under an hour in a car rental), but then an incredible park opens up with incredible colourful + interesting topography.- Our car fee to enter the park was $10.- There is a visitor center with some educational displays and explanations, along with a small store of souvenirs + drinks/snacks (and free drinkable water assuming you have an empty container). Also has restrooms --> get a map of the park (free) if you do not have one already. - The various sights are spread out inside the park and are too far in-between to walk/hike. - There are some hiking trails (20-45 minutes in length) which are a little demanding of reasonably appropriate shoes and health.- To see most of the park, and do some of the hikes, including a pic-nic lunch (which we brought) takes a 2.5-3.5 hours
This place is just gorgeous. It was a last minute decision to go here once we realized it didn't make sense to do Zion National Park in one day from Las Vegas. It turned out to be a great find. Rent a car and take a ride out there- about 30 minutes north of The Strip. Stop at Target on the way to get food to pack a lunch. (And while your at it, stop at Waffles Cafe for breakfast on the way to the park!) There are many beautiful hikes. Check out the many petroglyphs on the hike to Mouse's Tank. Stop at Rainbow Vista for stunning views of the surrounding multi-colored limestone. My favorite hike was at White Domes - a 1.25 mile loop which was mostly in the sand. Walk through the narrow canyons on this hike. This park was not crowded at all. We were able to see so many things in one day. Be aware that if you visit in the fall, the sun sets early (before 5) so you'll want to be on the road home before it gets dark. (No street lights in the state park!)
It only takes approximately one hour to get to Valley of Fire from the strip and the directions are very easy. There are many photography opportunities from your car and with short hikes. We did two hiking trails. The first was White Domes. I would recommend this one if you only have time for one. It was 1.75 miles round trip and pretty easy. There was loose sand so wear higher shoes. The trail was marked very clearly. There were many photos taken! The second was rainbow vista. It was approximately 1.75 miles round trip as well. We did not really see anything too stunning as far as "rainbow rocks" go but at the end of the train there was a great lookout over the valley. This was also a pretty easy hike with some spots sandy. Both trails only took 30-45 minutes each to complete including stopping for pictures.
From Las Vegas the drive to get to the park is one hour but well worth the drive. It is $10.00 per car to get into the park and you can spend all day there hiking and driving to the different areas. There are the most beautiful sandstone formations I feel you you ever see in your travels.
A visit to Valley of Fire is a must for anyone longing for nature after spending time in Las Vegas. The sandstone formations are wonderfully varied in shape and color, and most are accessible up-close without walking too far from your car--Elephant Rock is one example. Others are relatively short hikes away, and two of those we found notable were the White Domes Loop, which takes you through a slot canyon, and the Fire Wave Trail, with its banded waves of colorful sandstone. Although about 70 miles NE of Las Vegas, compared to the dozen miles to Red Rocks Canyon, Valley of Fire is incomparably the more impressive of the two because of its variety, the formations are more accessible, and there are far fewer cars to clog the roads and pull-offs. If you only have an hour or two to spare, take Red Rocks, but if you have half a day, choose Valley of Fire.
If you like the desert, this is a great area to visit just about a two hour easy drive from the Las Vegas, Henderson, Nv. area. Be sure to pack a picnic lunch and plenty of water and sun screen. The vistas are "unworldly". The red\ orange rock formations like nothing you've ever seen before. Several car ads have been filmed here. Not a whole lot of facilities other than a visitors center here but there are many places to pull out for pictures and to relax and soak up the beauty. Shade is a bit hard to find so not a good place to visit from July, August and September. Way to hot 100 to 115 degrees. Well worth the trip for a good day outing from the busy Las Vegas area. Enjoy!
Out for a Sunday drive and all of a suddent we discovered the Valley of Fire State Park. Only about an hour drive NE of Las Vegas and it was well worth the trip. The colors of the rocks are as vibrant as the Red Rock Canyon. Great views in every direction. Locals get a slight discount on the ticket price. They have picnic areas available. Check it out........it is great.........
The drive from Vegas was kind of dull. The views didn't start until you get a few miles off the freeway. Park staff was friendly. Visitor center was boring. They need much more parking there. We went in early March. It was warm in the sun with a cool breeze. We went on most of the hiking trails. If you go in the summer, it is probably an inferno. Bring water. I would imagine it hits 120 degrees at times. In fact, signs say not to attempt the longer trails if it is hot. The Mouse's hole trail had lots of shade along the way. If it is hot, it's still a neat place just to drive trough, with lots of views. We saw a few lizards and snakes.
WOW! You drive about 10 miles off of interstate 15 through desert and then all of a sudden this deep burnt orange/ red valley appears! Stunning! It looks like a post card! Cost to get in was $10 per car which was a steal! We went hiking and had a great time! Beautiful pictures taken here! Gift shop was closed, employee was sick that day. The visitors center had lots of information, video's playing and such. Great day!
