Great history and nice area and a local bakery next door. Would post more reviews but not enough words.
Located right in the center of town, the Tehachapi Depot Railroad Museum, staffed by volunteer docents - many with a history of railroad employment, is a Tehachapi "must see." The museum is well kept and clean. Everyone's love of the town's railroad history and local railroad artifacts is obvious. The original Depot was nearly completely rebuilt when a fire destroyed the whole effort. The City and the Friends of the Depot worked hard, raised money, and using the original plans and identical materials this "phoenix" was raised from the ashes! A wonderful piece of local history that is fun for the whole family.
The Tehachapi Depot Museum is really built with love and care. The team that has detailed this museum have made it one of the cleanest museums ever. The volunteer staff just loves this place to life. Every exhibit is so clean and the details have been carefully watched. For the history of trains, lots of train artifacts, and a train station that is the way you wish all train stations could be drop in and look over this on your wa between here and there. The bakery next door is great too! I like to come through and stretch the legs, have a nibble and learn something new about train history around Tehachapi and California
the volunteers are great and very knowledgeable, its a nice tour that doesn't take very long. we take family for a quick visit when in town
A rebuild of the historic Tehachapi Depot! Definitely a must-see in the center of Tehachapi city! There are often special events at the Depot and it is a fun visit for all ages.
The Railroad Museum has been burned down and rebuilt about three times, and this latest incarnation is only about four years old, but was built with the specifications and plans of the ORIGINAL one way back when. We went on a Sunday and were lucky enough to get a docent tour. The place is not large, and it doesn't take much time, but it was well worth it as we learned so much about trains and their operation in old times.
I love taking my son here. The staff is great and full of knowledge. The depot is right in the middle of town, lots of shops and restaurants near by. The depot is full of history of the railroad. My son loves the platform right by the tracks were he can see BNSF and Union Pacific trains roll by. Best of all its safe, there is even a little playground on the property.
The people who work here really love what they do. It is a nice small museum with tons of great railway things. The staff know EVERYTHING about it all and are so pleasant and ready to tell you. It was a truly nice look around!
Friendly, knowledgeable volunteer docents. Well organized displays of local rail history, including a raised relief map of the Tehachapi Loop. Nice gift shop. Shady trackside platform for train spotting.
We stopped in during the Chili Cookoff and Car Show and they had a panel discussion going with retired railroad men - very interesting!
The RR museum is a nice place to visit and learn about the RR heritage of the area. The docents are very knowledgeable and helpful. During the summer, First Fridays is a great time to visit Old Town since the museums and local galleries/gift shops are open 5-8pm. Many serve wine and light hor d'oeuvres. Nice and cool in the evening. Enjoy!
I had never heard about this place and just wandered. It is amazing, a beautiful little town, lots of atmosphere and this place just capped it off. What a history. For those railway fans this is a must!
Great exhibits, and wonderful, friendly, informative staff who want to make your visit to their community as fun and interesting as possible.
NIce, well-kept facility. Staff is available and eager to share information and answer questions. Exhibits are well-thought out and give an interesting picture of life in the area and the history of the railroad and its impact upon the growth of the region. Pleasant way to spend 30-45 minutes during a walking tour of Old Town
I really enjoyed our visit to this museum. The lady ( I can't remember her name, sorry) who took us round and explained the history and exhibits was wonderful .... she couldn't have been better. Tehachapi is a lovely little town this little museum story helps to enrich a visit there. Thank you to all who help to keep it running. Wonderful.
