This is an architechtual gem in Sacramento that almost met its demise because of eqarthquake safety standaards. Built sometime in the late 20's, this is a magnificant old auditorium that has seen everything from presidential candidates, the Beach Boys to boxing. It you can get inside do so...but just make sure you at least do a drive by to ogle this fine old downtown dame.
It has history, it has old glamour, it is beautiful. I saw Brandi Carlile and the Avett Brothers on Friday. The sound was awesome and the place is still rocking!!
This auditorium was restored about ten years ago, and I am so thankful that our city had the for-site to fund it! "The Memorial" as we call it, has housed countless concerts, graduations, events of all kinds for something like 60 years. When the gorgeous Alhambra Theater was torn down to make way for a supermarket (a crime) my family was worried that other valuable Sacramento landmarks would follow suit. Thankfully, the Memorial got her face lift, and is one the best things, besides the State Capitol and the Governor's Mansion, to happen in the downtown area.
My high school chose to have my graduation here. I have lived in Sacramento my whole life, but never actually went inside. This place really is fantastic; great acoustics. Nothing like Arco Arena (Or whatever they call it now) and centrally located in Downtown Sacramento.
There for Les Miz Sat. eve. Friendly staff despite the thousands. Main floor bartender made mixed drink after advising and allowing sniff test of alternatives (didn't touch anything), but too much ice--a fine point, yah. Still I gave $2 tip. Good warnings via flashing lights of show starting. Long before show started, auditorium perhaps 1/2 full, I took cellphone pic of companion and myself, as were others doing here and there but the usher lady advised from 50 feet, "No photography allowed." Huh? That was the only such advisory given to anyone. How pleasing!---The show: Good sound generally BUT if singer's voice trails off at all, the sound system loses it; so, too often word-ends and sentence-ends are quite unintelligible and nearly inaudible. Strong and regular--not tapering--voices are essential in the place.
Central location, near good restaurants. Small bathrooms for the amount of people attending a graduation.
I went to a Gala Dinner at the Memorial Auditorium recently and was impressed by the venue. It was quite nostalgic and had charm. The acoustics were quite good given the age of the venue. It is amazing to see the posters of the various acts that have performed over the decades.
Have attended jazz concerts and more recently high school graduations. Excellent facility for these uses. With its renovation, the facility is in great shape. Our school has used it for its graduations the past two years, graduating about 160 each time. A wonderful venue for this type of event - easy to see the graduates, good acoustics and seats.
I've been to the Memorial for lots of events, the last one was a high school graduation. It's a plush old venue, all the seats are good, acoustics are great. Try to see a show there for sure!
The Memorial Auditorium is another piece of Sacramento History - a beautiful building that has been totally restored and renovated - it is used for sporting events and some theatrical productions. A definite must see for history buffs.
-with 4,000 seats, i imagine this was the Radio City of the WREst but now it is closed to the public except for special events. we called the Convention Center which manages it and found out a seminar was being held there on a weekday- we spend 10 minutes there checking out what probably was the Radio City of California. exquisite building architectually from the outside
It needs some serious inside updates, the seats are super squeezed the people sitting on the row behind will hit your head with their knees, not cool!! I understand that the venue need to make $ of concessions but make you throw away your starbucks before you come in to buy their coffee inside its not nice to do to visitors!!
The Auditorium was host to the N.American Marriage Encounter Convention and what an atmosphere in it beautiful and spacious interior. It hosted many events in the past as shown in the photographs around. It was sad to read the names of all those brave men who gave up their lives in the different wars but great to have them remembered by this Memorial Auditorium.
This was a great little production in the small auditorium off of thelobby at the Memorial Auditorium
...the city decided to restore the Memorial Auditorium instead of tearing down yet another beautiful and historic building. This is the first time I have been back there since the concert days of the sixties and seventies and it looks wonderful.
