This home replaced the one burnt in the Civil War, and the first floor is open to the public. There is small museum area, lots and lots of helpful info on visiting Low Country, and the woman working there when I visited (with a British accent) was hugely knowledgeable, evening helping a "local" find what he was looking for. Even though I knew where I was going (to the Sheldon Church ruins), I'm glad I stopped. I got more info from her, and bought a few things as Christmas gifts to take back home. The add'l information available for free ultimately took me to Bluffton after I shot the church, and I wouldn't have gone otherwise. That is also worth the trip. In short, I'm glad I stopped.
The site of The Low Country Visitors Center-the place is great. wonderful plantation house with rooms made up to reflect past times. Great local items are sold and tour info given our. The grounds are beautiful. the trees splendid. Out back remains of old Civil War earth work are still there. Great for history buffs. The staff are great. Very friendly and helpful. Located right of I-95 with great signage. In fact, that's how I first found this place from the interstate billboard. The place is FREE to walk the grounds and tour. restrooms are located on facilities as well/ Well worth a stop.
This is so much more than a tourist stop. The home alone, set in historic splender , among old Live Oaks draped in Spanish moss. The southern breezes drift and you can smell the sea. Inside there is plenty of info for your travels. Also, you will find a museum from the Civil War and Revolutionary war. There are beautiful items from the time period. There is also a small section on Forrest Gump..who knew? Enjoy the home, enjoy the grounds...and a free taste of local cider, all around a good day!
Found this place driving on the way from Charleston to Myrtle Beach. Needed a quick break and was so pleasantly surprised. Worth a visit.Staff is knowledgeable and friendly. Inside on the main floor of the plantation house there is a well-stocked gift shop with historical books and memorabilia as well as a mini museum. Outside, the grounds are shaded with beautiful old trees. (aka South Carolina Lowcountry & Resort Islands Tourist Commission)
