We always use the La Crosse River Trail for biking and walking. Anyone new to the area or locals if you haven't tried it you should. You need a bike pass which is $20 for the year but well worth it to be away from traffic and in to the nature of the river, woods, or even see golfers from Welsh Coulee coming from or going to West Salem. You can go a long distance or just a short distance if you like. Either way it's well worth the trip.
Trail was well groomed, wide enough for safe side-by-side riding, well used enough for a few hellos with other riders/runners/walkers but not crowded, lots of rest areas with water+picnic tables or bench with shade or shelters & some small towns for food/other needs. It is a crushed limestone or gravel trail so a roadbike would not be recommended. Good mix of tree covered & open space. Informative signage for trail users.
This is my 2nd review of this trail. My wife and I were here last month and had bike issue so we came back for another try. What a nice trail. My wife got a flat tire in West Salem but the tire guy at Cenex Station had us back going in no time. Rode into La Crosse and Onalaska then back to Sparta where we started. We put out 51 miles of enjoyable riding. A must do if you bike.
My wife and I traveled just a few miles on this trail when in Sparta. We ran into some bike malfunctions and headed home. It was a great ride while we were on the trail and our planning our next trip to Sparta to ride the whole trail.
Trial was nicely taken care of and maintained. Ride is scenic and covers some beautiful country. Well worth the time to ride!!!!One complaint: DNR could do a better job of fixing holes in the trail and policing litter.
Didnt hike or bike this area but you cant miss this in Wisconsin or even the states...friendly and warm. This is the place to stay in this area
it is a good view and so nice to visit and a really cool place to go if your bored and love to walk on trails and i give it 100% nice view and all come and visit and check it out
The trail along the river was beautiful that time of year, but it smelled so badly like there was an array of dead fish floating on the surface. The water is pretty disgusting. What can you expect?
Excellent surface to run on except going through the 3/4 mile long tunnel twice. Almost twisted my ankle 3 times each way through.
This path is in the sun for most of the ride, be sure to leave early if you can't take the heat. Slight grade and the path is somewhat soft, so you may think you have a flat...no, it's not a flat, it's just a little mushy so you work harder than you will on a paved road. A lovely ride, you cannot go wrong.
An excellent trail for anyone to enjoy the Wisconsin farmland and some great small towns along the way with restaurants The towns of Sparta & Onalaska located at the trail start and end points have the most to offer for lodging. Totally flat for easy riding. The Sparta terminus has an excellent store in the old train station with rest rooms and gifts.
Was a great day, we biked all afternoon and stopped for lunch. Would highly suggest going!
Close to the Wisconsin Dells, this river walk is among the best in the nation. The park is gigantic and the view of the river is breathtaking. Many tavel from all across the nation to enjoy the route on a bicycle. This area is known as America's biking capital for it's many miles of bicycle routes.
Whatever you like, biking or runnning this is your place.Scenic and enjoyable
