This house is so full of history! Bob the volunteer tour guide was so knowledgable and you can really tell their historic society is going above and beyond to preserve this fantastic home. Really gives you a sense of western Pennsylvania when it was frontier country around the American Revolution!
My whole family loves this historical gem, located 15 min. from downtown Pittsburgh. There is something for every member of the family. Architecture, Antiques, Frontier Life, Period Music, Soldiers, Reenactors, and more. I love The "Holidays at the House" event. It is a close look at Christmas time in the Western Pa area, during the period of 1780 - 1820. There is a wonderful gift shop with lots of interesting items for sale. If you like Williamsburg, Woodville Plantation is a place you need to visit.
Woodville Plantation presents a fascinating and edifying view of the late 1700s through the lives of its former occupants. The tour of the house given by docents in period dress makes the visitor feel a part of that time and place in history. I have been there for small concerts and tours. I particularly enjoyed an all-day cooking experience which featured a meal cooked over an open fire that would have been typical for the Neville family and then served in the family dining room lit only by candles. This is a great place for families with school-aged children to learn what it was like to live without modern conveniences. The Woodville Plantation website describes other events which look enticing such as the Stool Ball Tournament and Holiday Tour. And the price of admission is so reasonable that visitors can go back over and over again.
This National Historic Landmark is a real step back into history! Each Sunday afternoon, the frontier attired docents give an informative tour about the home, the families who lived there and life in the 1700's. Annually on the third Sunday in November "The Great Illumination" is recreated. It allows one to experience what the winter holidays were like for the wealthy in the eighteenth century. Other special events occur throughout the year and each is entertaining. Good education experience for children and adults!
If you're in to history at all I would strongly suggest a visit to Woodville Plantation. It was originally the core of a huge frontier plantation that played a central role in the Whiskey Rebellion of 1794. It is fully preserved and furnished with period antiques. The docents do a nice job of telling the story of the house and its role in the Whiskey Rebellion. On occasion they have special events with special programming, reenactors, etc. Well worth an afternoon. House tours are only on Sunday so check out their website.
