the avenue of 444 flags

We found out about this memorial on the TripAdvisor website. It is a very special memorial to an event that people sometimes forget. 444 days of captivity...a flag for each day. We found it very moving. They do need some attention to the flags as several looked a bit worn and a few of the poles were leaning. The Canadian flag was very worn and needs to be replaced. The signage was not good at all. We circled around twice before we actually caught site of the flags from the road and found our way. This is a site to be seen. If you are anywhere nearby, take a little time and drive down the lane.

Most people do not know why the flags are there and what they stand for. If your patriotic this is something you should see. I served in the Army for 21 years and places like this mean a lot to service members.

A lovely idea, in memory of 444 Americans taken hostage. It is touching to see families have added real photos of their loved ones. The memorial flags look great but some work is needed on a few flags, that are no longer straight. You can tour this in 15 min. ,get out of the car, read, photos, walked around. I did enjoy it, just want to see things spruced up a bit.

The sight of 444 flags was amazing. It was so nice to see a Canadian flag on pole 86 to mark the Canadian involvement in the 1980 hostage crisis.

still amazing to see the flags flying! we visited my father and my grandparents graves and it is heart warming to see the flags flying and the veterans that are buried there also to have flags flying in honor of the service they provided

My wife had read something about “The Avenue of 444 Flags” back in England so my grandson and I ensured it was on the itinerary on the way to Cleveland OH. Tom Flynn’s initial idea has given America a lasting memorial to the Iranian hostages in their 444 day captivity. The website states: “Our hope is that it will touch your minds and your hearts to lift your understanding, appreciation, and knowledge of veterans, and most importantly, your compassion for them.” Well Mr. Flynn, it does all that and more – even for we Brits who have also been touched by terrorism for a long time. There is something immensely moving about all the flags and the beautiful way they are laid out. As we travelled further into the park, we came across the powerful War on Terror Memorial and it was salutary to read the little plaques accompanying some of the flags. The eternal flame is a lovely touch and allowed us to ponder on the unfortunate necessity to create such a potent reminder of the threat to world security caused by terrorism. Don't just drive through. Parking is easy and there is more time to reflect. Highly recommended.P.S. Afterwards we went into one of the best small town emporiums I have visited in 33 States. Try and visit Kraynak’s Store nearby. We defy you to leave without buying something. What a treasure trove - and the staff were really welcoming too.

We like taking our kids through this to see the flags and remember what they are for. Its something everyone should drive through at least once.
