We went up to the alpaca farm on a whim. My girlfriend had wanted to visit a farm and we were planning a road trip in Pennsylvania and decided to make a stop in Mercersburg at Long Acres Alpaca Farm. Getting there was pretty easy, we were able to use Google maps to get to the correct place. The farm is at the very end of the driveway, so just keep driving back (when we went we stopped too early). We met the owner who as very nice, and she started out explaining the differences in alpaca fiber and what makes it so nice. She showed us a number of different ways of turning the raw fiber into usable material. While on the tour we saw three different groups of Alpaca, beginning with the pregnant alpaca, then the mothers and baby alpaca, and then the male alpaca. The alpaca were very friendly and curious and would come right up to us. The owner would bring an alpaca over for us to touch and show us the thickness of their wool. We also got to hand feed the alpaca and bottle feed one of the babies. The farm has around ~130 alpaca and it was well worth the visit. The cost of the tour gets rebated to you as a gift certificate to a store downtown selling alpaca goods and natural fibers. For us the cost was $20 (it's $2 per person with a minimum of $20), and we ended up using the certificate at the store afterwards. Our tour lasted about 2 hours, we definitely had a lot of fun.
