It's a beautiful lighthouse and a must if you're a lighthouse "collector". It's a great view out to Lake Hurron and we biked to it from Rogers City. The path is better than any road downstate and it isn't too strenuous until you get just to the entrance of the park. It's a little steep there but if it's to much just push the bike up the hill, it's worth it!
just by chance we were driving US 23 north to mackinaw city, and came across this gem of a lighthouse....restored a few years ago, and manned by volunteers, this is a must see classic lighthouse....the view from the top is serene (unless you are in the process of manning the light) a number of rooms have period furniture, and the basement has an intersting collection of early washday items (irons, washers and dryers, etc., plus a number of interesting old magazines and ads)...there are the remanins of a 1905 shipwreck along the beach about 250 yards to the laft of the lighthouse (skeletal, but interesting to see), and the old fog horn steam generating room is open also, the pilot house of the "calcite" is on the grounds as well...a gift shop (the old bunk house) has a nice selection as well...watch out for the poison ivy.......
My entire family came for a visit and we went to the light house for the day. Great locations for picnics and views of Lake Huron are awesome. The museum is great and the Interpreter did a good job of answering our questions. Not every one made the hike up the stairs of the tower but we did do a swim out to one of the ship wreck sites. Beautiful beaches and the bike trail to Rogers City was also great. Wonderful place to enjoy the sun, beach and water.
40 Mile Point Lighthouse was well worth the stop. The tour of the lighthouse was very informative and interesting. Looking out onto Lake Huron we had a magnificent view and the staff were very friendly. The grounds were just as interesting with lots of history and plenty of it posted around to satisfy even the most curious of lighthouse history buffs. We got lucky when we went down to the beach to see the shipwrecked Joseph S. Fay. A college from Alpena was there taking measurements and documenting the remains of the port side of this ship. We were able to ask lots of questions and glean a lot of information from the professor and many of the students. Make this a stop on your lighthouse tour of the Sunrise side of Michigan.
The lighthouse is very interesting with its antiques and artifacts. A guide gives you a brief history and you can go up to the top to look out over Lake Huron. There is a short path to the beach, other buildings to visit and a nice gift shop.
Self guided lighthouse tour after a brief welcome and introduction from one of the volunteers. Lots of artifacts and historical memorabilia. The Pilot house from the USS Calcite was open for a tour also and was maned by a VERY knowledgeable volunteer as well. Took a stroll (in the rain) to the beach to see the remains of a shipwreck. Nice way to spend an hour!
Our family of 6 visited twice over our 10 day camping Trip at Hoeft State Park. They have a gift shop featuring Lighthouse Tshirts, paintings, books and other items. Tour guides are present and informative. The old house and it's history is pretty neat. We learned something new about the area and Maritime history.
We were able to tour the museum with artifacts depicting the everyday life of the lighthouse keeper. We climbed to the top answer ere greeted by a guest keeper who told us a bit of the history of this particular lighthouse. A bonus on the grounds is the pilot house of the Calcite, a steam powered freighter, where another guest keeper answered questions and kept us entertained.
This area had a very charming and warm feel to it. We unfortunately visited while the actual museum was closed but we were still able to walk around the property and look at things, including a shipwreck on the beach. We did however encounter a massive black fly problem, and they do bite!
Lighthouse and keepers home fully restored also the pilot house of the 'Calcite' a 1912 lake freighter. The goal of this site is to maintain it as a nautical museum. They have campsites as well as a guest lighthouse keepers program for long term visitors. It is a nice site and you will appreciate the effort being put into the project. No charge for just looking around and taking in the beauty of Lake Huron, of course; a visit to the gift shop would be appreciated but not required.
We loved our bike ride to the light house, my kids thought that was one of the coolest parts of our trip to Hoeft State park. We enjoyed speaking with the volunteer curator, skipping stones out on the beach while we checked out the wreck and enjoying the view from the top.
On the way to Mackinaw? Don't miss this one. It's a great spot with a nice harbor from the storm. You typically have the place to yourself and the scenery is beautiful every time.
Right at the end of the paved Huron Sunrise Bike Trail, 40 Mile Point Lighthouse is a great destination. There is a pilot house on the site with a range of navigational equipment used throughout generations of ship travel on the Great Lakes. The lighthouse is surrounded by beautiful grounds and you can tour the keepers quarters and climb the tower. There's even the remains of a shipwreck visible a short walk down to the beach! They don't charge admission, only take donations.
Really glad we stopped here. The lighthouse and keepers house are well maintained and there were helpful folks giving info to enhance our experience.
What a beautiful setting for a lighthouse. You can sit for hours and just dream. The venue has several outbuildings with alot of history to enjoy. A path goes down to Lake Huron to view a shipwreck area. About 35 miles south of Cheboygan right off US 23. If you are a lighthouse lover............don't miss this one!
