This delightful museum reflected so much of what makes Stony Creek a special place: long history of hard working skilled trades; beautiful homes and views; honest, forthright people; multi-generations putting down deep roots. I lived in Stony Creek from 1967-1977 and have come to love the place more every time I visit. The museum's exhibit on the Stony Creek quarry was especially interesting to me, since it has served and continues to serve as the lifeblood of the town. The simple, honest pride the host showed in the area was refreshingly common and not at all haughty. (Yes, Yankees, can come off that way at times.) Great place to really get a sense of life in a small coastal village over the centuries.
This museum is in an old firehouse. While not very large, the exhibit that we saw, about the hurricane of 1938 was fascinating. They also had a recently discovered trunk from a quarry worker that was on display. Well worth a look.
Cute little New England Museum packed with town history Lot of information on the granite quarries and the history of the vacation community. Docents are so friendly and keen to share all the history of this lovely area. Well worth the visit.
Stony Creek Museum's special exhibit when we visited focused on the great hurricane of 1938, and the artifacts for that were great. We learned some new facts about the area, too. We were a little disappointed that photos of Stony Creek were either 1900ish or relating to the 1938 hurricane. We would have liked to have seen photos from the 1950s and 1960s, too. But all in all, it was interesting. And a bonus the day we were there was the grandson of an early town merchant was there and shared some great stories.
The village of Stony Creek is steeped in New England History...Start at the newly opened Museum , then have lunch over looking the harbor at one of two locally owned eateries, visit the small shops and ride one of the local ferry boats for a tour of the Thimble Islands.....Pirate stories, a look at the amazing houses and their history which are on the many small islands. What a wonderful day you will have!!!!!!!!!
