But it's only a dollar to get in, so I guess that's OK. They have some cool relics, guns, etc. The architecture inside is the best part. You need to ask them about the moldings, etc. when you giet inside. Also, the cucumber tree is very cool. Don't climb it! Someone would have to bail you outta the pokey, lol.
This Violet Bank Museum, which should be called General Lee's Headquarters (during the siege of Petersburg) - guess that's too long - Is OUTSTANDING. Three things: amount & quality of artifacts, access to rooms Lee used daily, and especially the docent (tour guide) we had. I am just sorry I did not get his name, but he was amazing. He provided entertaining and extremely in-depth information about everything in the house, He conveyed an unbelievably extensive knowledge about the Civil War - I think we went through the tour with our mouths open the whole time :-) The authentic artifacts were very numerous - worth seeing & hearing about just those. But that was just one of three excellent features of this tour. In many tours, you have to stand behind a barrier & peer into a room. We got to go in every room in the house & had chills when standing in the room where Lee and Jefferson Davis had a meeting. General Grant's headquarters during that siege is only 10 miles from Lee's & I'm glad we got to be there, but there is no comparison to the tour of Lee's headquarters. This attraction should also be listed under Petersburg, in my opinion.
Most people don't even know this is here. It was interesting however nothing that sparked that ahh moment from history.
Ok this place may not knock your socks off but to me, I love it. I live near it and every so often I just drive by to look again. The little museum is interesting with the civil war history to read about. They also do reenactments at times. However, the reason I love it is the ginormous cucumber tree there! No it does not produce cucumbers but it is one of the oldest trees in the US and it is truly a sight to behold. When family visits from the Midwest I always take them to see it. They have never seen anything like it!
