If you are going on the Fairfax walking tour, do stop in and see this house during its open hours. Gives a fine feel for the history of the town. Start your tour at the Fairfax Museum and Visitor's center.
This house gives you a look into what daily life was like in the early 1800s. The main part -- a one room dwelling includes furnishings and implements from that time period and you can also see later additions to the home dating to the early 1920s. While this is an interesting home to visit, it is usually open only during special events. The garden is open year round and offers a welcoming peaceful expanse of green in the center of an often busy downtown Fairfax. It comes alive in December with special lighting displays and live caroling. And the local art league has open air painting demonstrations from time to time. Even if the house isn't open and no events are ongoing, a walk through the gardens is pleasant and harkens back to a time when homes had deep lots -- something not seen so often anymore in our more densely populated times.
