Skyline caverns is a must place to visit if you come through Virginia took my 8yr old son there he had a blast it was very educational and cool at the same time there not many places you can say that about.
My boyfriend and I are geologists visiting caverns over spring break and we were not disappointed! Our tour guide was hilarious and very knowledgeable! The tour was more than a walk, it was a show!
We visited Aug 2013 & loved it. I meant to write this a long time ago ;) The tour was great and they have a little train you can ride for an additional fee. My boys were 2 & 5 at the time and loved it. It is cold in the caverns so bring sweatshirts and have pants for the little ones!
I've visited several caverns in the Shenandoah Valley. Each have unique things about them. This one had the "Cave Flowers" that you don't see in the others.
I've been in some huge beautiful caverns as a child so I was not impressed with Skyline. I thought it was low, narrow & overall tiny compared to previous experience. My 2 Adult Daughters enjoyed themselves and this was their 1st Cave. Pricewise the 3 different Caverns in area were same. I don't know if they would have been better, but did here that Lurey was bigger. Guide was amusing and Knowledgeable.
This was a fun side trip on our way to FL, the caves are fun to explore with the family, bring your sweatshirt, it is very cold down in the caves
We had a great time at the Caverns, the only downfall was that we had two little ones (5 & 6) who did get a little tired after walking, you can take strollers but Whoa! there are a ton of stairs but the view is amazing and our tour guide was great.
Recently visited the Skyline Cavers on a cold January Sunday. We were looking for something to do with our 4 year old and figured why not go exploring. The Skyline Cavern is a short 1 1/2 hours from Alexandria/DC. The drive is pretty and I am always amazed how country it gets when you are only 1 hour outside of DC. The caverns have a great gift shop with everything you would expect (plenty of rocks and crystals). More than enough stuff to have you little ones constantly yelling, "Can I have this?". The tour was maybe 1 and 1/2 hour which is plenty of time to be underground and see everything. Bring a light jacket if you get cold easily. I think the temperature was around the mid-50s. Warmer than outside in January. Staff was very helpful and courteous. Overall, I would highly recommend to a family looking for something to do on a slow weekend. No crowds, easy drive from the city and just good plain fun.
If you're in the area, and you have a choice, Luray Caverns is much more beautiful and larger than Skyline, The fee is cheaper at Skyline and offers Anthodite crystal formation which are very rare. They are a calcium crystalite only able to form in a vacuum. The entire cave was filled with dirt when discovered and this area of it stayed open to air. It's worth the visit and only a few miles outside of Front Royal.
Average as far as caverns are concerned. Better priced than Luray Caverns a few miles down the road. Its been a few years since I was here - but I drive by every day and nothing has changed in the 25 yrs I have lived in this area.
We were on the way to Luray Caverns and noticed skyline on the way. Thought we'll stop here since it would save us an hour + by avoiding Luray. To our surprise the people inside were nice and the guide was very professional and friendly. It may not be as big as Luray, however it was good in it's own sense. The crystal exhibits are very good. My toddler was very excited.
These caverns are just over an hour from the Washington DC suburbs, so an easy trip for most down I-66. The tours are about 1/2 as costly as the more well-known caverns in the area (Luray Caverns, etc.) and the tour is just as much fun. Staff was very friendly and our tour guide seemed very knowledgable and answered many questions. The kids loved the entire thing! It is an easy walk (there are some steps at the end), and just watch your head if you're over 6' tall.
We managed to get a private tour during a slow time, it was really neat. Compared to a few other caverns I've been in the area, this tour was a great length (1 hour) and I felt like we got our money's worth. The anthodites are amazing, such a treat! I would definitely suggest this tour, and don't forget to check their website for coupons!
The caverns were beautiful and our guide, Jen, did a fantastic job. We thoroughly enjoyed the tour and got some great pictures.
Great 1+ mile (but less than 2mi) walking tour of the underground caverns. Our tour guide, Jeff, was excellent. Friendly, charming and knowledgable. You could tell he was happy to be there and happy to teach us about this beautiful and unique place. The walk through isn't strenuous and the tour isn't rushed. You can bring a water bottle if needed, but no bathrooms down there. It's a chilly 54 degrees, so plan accordingly!
