The building is well-preserved at the Lynchburg City Cemetery, with plantings that are true to the era. The building includes audio narratives and really takes you back to another time. It is free and easy to reach - right off 5th Street.
This little "museum" is inside the old cemetery. You walk around the outside of the little building looking in at the various Civil War era displays of how disease was treated 150 years ago. Very interesting and disturbing!
The Pest House along with the Hearse House and Caretakers Museum, the Station House Museum and the Mourning Museum are all part of the Old City Cemetery. There is also a Chapel on the property. It was a most interesting visit to this historic cemetery. We visited in the winter and hope to return again in the spring/summer to see the antique roses and other gardens. For Civil War buffs it is a must to see. Allow plenty of time to meander through the walking trails. One section of the site contains the graves of over 2000 Civil War soldiers from 14 states. There was no charge for this interesting and history filled museum.
This is a little house replicating the old "pest house" where people with contagious diseases were sent before the Civil War. It was used during the Civil War as a hospital. You look in the windows and listen to recordings. It is hard to see in the windows. This site is in Old City Cemetery.
This museum is in a cemetery. It is a small house with a garden around it. You look inside through the windows. Has button activated recording that tells about the house and the gardens.
My husband was a doctor and it was interesting to see how far we have come in the last 150 years. This is on the grounds of the Old City Cemetary.
Awesome place to visit. Especially like the bee-hives at the admin. building. Lynchburg appears to be missing a LOT of bees. Very pretty place and the history lesson is so interesting. Don't miss the cemetery and the rose garden with roses going back to 1730's. Awesome.
