The short review: The museum has interesting displays, a short film worth watching. The home is a work in progress which, I think, makes it even more interesting. This is a quick, easy place to stop. The long review: There are bigger, more well-known historic sites in the area, but Sandusky Historic Site is worthwhile and easy to fit into your day. The location is peaceful and attractive. The museum is interesting and can be "done" in 1/2 hour. the home is in the process of being restored and it's very interesting to hear and see how the work has progressed, to compare the restored with non-restored. It was a private home for around 200 years and an important home in Civil War history. The guides/docents were (I think) students or graduate students and they were friendly and knowledgeable. They seemed to have a genuine attachment to the home. This is an historic site worth supporting with a visit.

While the one-time headquarters of General David "Black Dave" Hunter is undergoing restoration, this historic site is worth a visit. As with all good restorations, this one is being done with great care and thought. One impressive fact is that the furnishings are largely specific to the house. One can see an original painting that was slashed by a Union soldier. The visitor center has much useful information about the history of site and the area. The 55-minute DVD documentary "Hunter's Raid: The Battle for Lynchburg" is available through the gift shop and gives good insight into the events that occurred in the Lynchburg area in June 1864.

Be sure to watch the video before the tour - very informative and well done. Our tour guide was very friendly and knowledgable. A beautiful home with lots of architectural features.

Currently (July 2013) Sandusky is undergoing extensive renovation and closed - but a very pleasant docent made an exception for me and took me on a tour. She provided an incredible amount of information about the history of the place, the presidents who have stayed there and efforts to preserve it.

this is a great place to go for some interesting VA and Lynchburg history. The site also has a small area that is very attractive to rent for smaller events

While we didn't have time to visit the whole site, the stories we heard and the welcome center were great! the boxwoods are amazing to be so old.

Touring the Sandusky home made the Civil War more relevant to me. The guide was excellent and the information, the buildings, and the furnishings.combined to make the tour most interesting.

They Sandusky society is slowly renovating this location and it looked like a nice place to visit, but noone was home on Sunday afternoon during posted open hours.

This lovely 1808 Federal period home was Union headquarters for the Battle of Lynchburg, 1864. Two future U.S. presidents were stationed here.Great museum of medicine for that historic period. We have visited it for special events, which are always fun. Go back in time for an hour!
