Nothings tells history like the folks who made it, and they speak loudest from the places of their rest. To see how the past treated its citizens in death is to glimpse how they were seen in life. From Confederate soldiers who fought to defend the South to prominent citizens of colour who made their way through a myriad of trials to success. Stories of bravery, loyalty, class and freedom, speak loudly from the silent stones. Don't miss the rose garden in bloom this spring, heirloom roses cultivated as a monument to the people on whose shoulders we stand.

Old City Cemetery is a gem in Lynchburg. It's a great place for a picnic or a glimpse at some of Lynchburg's civil war history. and in late may / early june, when the large collection of antique roses is blooming, it's probably the prettiest place in Lynchburg.

This cemetery is beautiful, historic, and a great place to take family portraits. Come and explore the amazing Civil War sections, the museum, the mini chapel, the swing, and many other spots along the road here.

If you like cemeteries and history, this one is great. Lots of old headstones, some exhibits about history and really a beautiful walk. If you go when the roses are blooming, so much the better!

The Old City Cemetery is such a beautiful property in Lynchburg. One can get lost roaming the grounds and visiting the structures!

I'm sure that there are people out there that would say "enjoying a cemetery" is kinda strange. This is a unique place that got to where it is through one of Lynchburg's best known landscape designer's. Jane White. The grounds include an old country church, the Stapleton Railroad Station, and The Pest House - all moved to the site. The place is fun for kids. During Halloween there are Ghost Story Parties and night time tours.

Beautiful landscaping, so well done, steeped in history. Easy to walk through and also suited to drive through. Historical markers are easy to read.

This was a very cool place to go! They offer very well done maps so that you can pick exactly the parts that interest you. You could even go on a little scavenger hunt finding people. (I hope that's not morbid, but you are reading this because you're interested in visiting a cemetery...) It's a well kept area with very nice looking old plots and statues. There are several museums on site where you can peer in through the windows while listening to audio or it said you can schedule an appointment to actually go in them (we did not do this though). There is a really cool tree swing there that you have to experience!! And if you're into geocaching, you might want to load that app while you're here. This place was a very cool experience that you should definitely be a part of!

This place is a jewel in Lynchburg. So much history and well explained with the museum which is sobering and informative.. if you are into photography you must go there in spring of the year when all fo te flowers are in bloom. they make a great backdrop for very old headstones and burial fences as well as a focal point. Part of the road is the old brick which ads to its histroic charm. The confederate cemetery is sobering and almost whisks you back to another time as does the pestelence house and the museums..

My little family loves to visit the Cemetery. The grounds are very well kept. There are beautiful graves, bright colored flowers, and quite a few historical attractions to look at. It's a great place to go for a picnic, for family photos, or to just walk around on a sunny day. We were even lucky enough to catch a train passing the old station last time we were there. My toddler was thrilled!

This was one of the best places we visited in the Lynchburg area and it was free. It consists of a self-guided walking/driving tour with excellent, informative brochures available at the entrance. The five interactive House Museums are what makes this more than just a walk in a cemetery. Found the Pest House Medical Museum especially intriguing and makes one grateful to be living in the present day when an illness strikes. The Staff at the Mourning Museum was super friendly plus giving us some extra history on "the Red Light District" of Lynchburg. Make this a stop when you are in the area.

well informed tour guide recited the lives and locations of the graves of the bawdy ladies whose profession was in existence until the 1960s. Wonderful Sunday afternoon history excursion.

Believe it or not, this is a great place to visit. In addition to the historical structures and demonstrations, the flowers, especially the heritage roses, are wonderful. The group in charge does a nice job of portraying funerals from the town's past, as well as its medical practices. There are numerous places to stroll and sit, including the old train depot and chapel. A hidden treasure right off 5th Street.

This place is beautiful. Quiet, peaceful, gorgeous. Yes, it's a cemetery, but it's so much more than that. It's a wonderful garden with so many awesome places. The chapel is adorable. There are many events here all throughout the year, and you can check it out on their Facebook page. I come here quite often. If you haven't been here, check it out. It's a hidden gem within the city.

A great way to stay an afternoon in Lynchburg. If possible please check in at the museum shop prior to walking through the cemetery. The shop is a good preface before exploring the property to learn more about its past. There are a number of events the cemetery host through out the year. Don't miss the Candle light tours in October or the antique rose festival in May.
