Had a cool pizza oven outside in the patio area, but that was the highlight of the visit. The person helping us with the tasting was not friendly at all, and it wasn't because they were busy. There were all of five people in the place. The wines were very average.
Visited with my friend on our day of wine tasting. I purchased a groupon to try this winery. The groupon was a tasting for two, souvenir glasses and a $10 voucher to use. The grounds are nice and you have to drive over a tiny pass that crosses a pond. Be careful if you have been tasting a few wineries prior to coming. The host says no one has driven it their as of yet, lol. Ok we were greet by the friendliest Lab that waited patiently for us so he could follow us to the front door. When we went in so did he and right up the stairs to the second floor. The host said he knew where he wanted to go. This winery has a full kitchen that is behind the wine tasting bar, the fireplace was inviting and they had a small area where you could relax. The decor was nice with wine displays, jewelry, wine bags and a refrigerated cheese and meat area. The views from the tasting room are very beautiful and you can see the pond and the geese. My favorite wine was Peace Rose 2011. When we were leaving we leave with two glasses as promised and I chose the Boars Head Smoked Gouda as my gift. Used the $10 voucher towards some Boars Head Dry Italian Sausage. Oh and we got two packs of crackers. Overall great value for the groupon and great experience. The host was friendly and just let us hang out for a while. We were the only ones there at the time so we enjoyed the warmth of the fireplace. Plan to go back during the spring or summer to see the views again.
This place gets a 4 for the wines, but the service would have gotten a 3. My husband and I stopped in here after visiting Mediterranean Cellars where we had a fantastic tasting. There was no one in the tasting room and 3-4 employees working. They were all chatting while just looking at us standing waiting to be served. Once we were served, our server was personable. We enjoyed the Vidal Blanc, Sweet Nothings, and Grace. They had a really nice seating area outside, but it was an overcast, cool day when we visited so we didn't take advantage of the area. We would be willing to visit again and give them another chance.
We were in the area visiting Mediterranean Cellars, which is across the street from this one and we decided to stop in here afterwards - We were sooo happy we did, as Mediterranean wasn't all we thought it would be.Upon entering Marterella, we were instantly greeted and offered a tasting. The tastings are rather pricey, at $10 for white only or red only or $15 for both. So, we split a white only tasting. We actually really liked all of their wines and ended up buying two bottles; both off of their red menu. They have an amazing sangiovese which costs $45, but is very nice - we got it too! (Our suggestion to the owner - include all wines in a single $10 tasting, please! You have nice offerings!)The owner and staff were great to chat with and they were friendly. They also have a wood-fired outdoor pizza oven which looks like it provides some tasty pies!Their grounds were nicely done and nicely maintained. The overall prices are rather high for VA wine, but they do have some nice offerings.
