this is a great ski area, run well--in a winter with very little natural snow, wintergreen turned our a great product--as their slogan says-every day is a great ski day

This place is really a conference center with some ski runs, not the other way around. Who builds a ski resort without a lodge? Every element of this place is designed to gouge you for every possible expense. There is nowhere to stash a bag or boots, but we did find a very small breezway room on the 1st floor below the cafeteria with 5 tables where you can eat a picnic lunch, otherwise you eat in your car.There were no stairs available to the public to get from 1st floor lockers/rental to the restaurant on 2nd floor. The cafeteria was the closest thing to a lodge, but only if you were buying food.The worst part was the lack of a learning area. The 2 magic carpets are ONLY for the youth program or ski school. The gentle slope right out of the building was a massive confluence of traffic and impossible to teach anyone. Thankfully my 5 yr old was skilled enough to get down the slope and was ready for the chairlift as that was the only option. Congestion and ski conditions got much better once we got away from the buildings, the only reason we gave it a 2/5 rating. Do not consider this place if you are just starting to learn or teach someone unless you are paying for a lesson.The worst part was the uninformed foreign exchange service employees. A couple employees I asked didn't even know what a magic carpet was and one was unaware of a trail map. I appreciated the snowmaking and the condos are convenient, but this place leaves a lot to be desired. The tubing was the worst we'd ever experienced. They run the event with excruciating rules (though you can't hear the guy on the PA system) and only permit one wave at a time, so we only got 6 or 7 runs in the 2 hour block. The slope is actually too steep, so it will scare little kids. I am surprised people don't get hurt as you are going 40-45 mph.

My family of three went on a quick weekend getaway to Wintergreen on 1/29 - 1/30/15. Thursday we went tubing - tubing is awesome! It was not crowded because it was a Thursday and we had a great time and the staff on the TUBING slope were very helpful. On Friday, my husband and son went snowboarding. Both beginners, they tried to stay on the Potato Patch slope (beginner's slope - essentially the bunny hill for Wintergreen). It seems that each time they hold a CLASS for beginners, Wintergreen shuts down the lift on that slope. So beginners NOT taking the class can go to the bottom of the hill, but the lift is closed so they can't get back up. Having paid for two 8 hour lift ticket, this seems dishonest of Wintergreen to turn that lift off at all. They need to move the classes away from the Potato Patch to a different location. Then there's the skiers vs the snowboarders issue. Skiers were constantly buzzing by the snowboarders and snowboarders seemingly sliding into the path of the skiers. It's a recipe for disaster and Wintergreen management needs to get-it-together and schedule certain slopes for skiing only during certain times and the same for snowboarding times. They have enough room to accommodate doing so and can create more slopes that share lifts if need be. Finally, those evil snow machines. It was Friday, daytime, and wind direction was coming from the bottom of the slopes/hill going upwards. It was an exceptionally windy day per the weather channel. The snow machines were on A L L-D A Y. It's not "snow" the machines make but ice. Wind direction merely carried the ice up the hill so anyone trying to go DOWN the slope was met with white-out conditions and pelted relentlessly with ice. They apparently don't take wind direction into account when turning the machines on and off. After my husband had met his threshold of tolerance, he and my son gave up and went to return their equipment. He tried to express his concerns to the supervisor of the rental equipment department and was met with a bad attitude - essentially ignoring my husband. So my husband has vowed we will NEVER go there again. Massanutten wins in comparison just by caliber of employees alone. Do yourself a favor and spare yourself the grief - skip Wintergreen.

Most of my skiing experience is from California, Colorado, and Europe, so my expectations weren't too high for Wintergreen. I was pleasantly surprised by the well maintained slopes. The snow, almost all of it man-made, was sufficient, and usually didn't get too slushy until later in the day. The slopes are short, and the lines get long on the weekends (their main lift typically had a 20 minute wait on weekend afternoons), but it has enough room to teach people to ski for the first time. Get away from the main hill if you can to avoid the largest crowds and the beginning skiers who are just learning skiing etiquette.The biggest detractor is the management of the place. Everyone seems to be specialized in their own little area, with no knowledge of the rest of the park. Lift ticket sales know very little about ski lessons or rentals and the same in return. There are two places for kids to get lessons, but they know very little about what the other offers, despite working for the same resort. Packages for lift-rental-lessons aren't really clearly laid out. If you sift through all of their literature, you can eventually figure it all out, but it felt like I was dealing with an airline pricing structure. It sure would be nice if their management fixed this, so it was a little easier on the guest.

Having grown up in the Northeast and living in the Northwest the skiing in Virginia just simply does not compare but of the places we have skied in Virginia - this is our favorite. Wish the six-person chairlift wasn't always so crowded or that they had a couple more easy trails with additional chair lift. My six year old is learning to ski - unless you are taking a lesson you can not use the magic carpet(conveyor belt). So this means there are a lot of little kids who are just learning how to ski getting on, off and falling off the chair lifts which means they stop it to allow them to clear the chairlift area. Wish they would let little kids use the magic carpet to at least get used to skiing before they head off down the steeper easy slopes. Café at the base of six person lift is great to take a break at. Ample outdoor seating and they usually have a local beer there on tap.Since we live a couple of hours away - we will be back.

It's not the best but it's close. The slopes are short, it can get crowded, and it is a little costly but I always have fun. The expert slopes are usually your best bet, not too hard and much less crowded.

Went yesterday. No crowds or lift lines. Nice snow, no ice. This is a great family place. For East Coast skiing, Wintergreen is hard to beat. Can't wait to go back.

Wintergreen is a decent place to keep up with your slope skills. Once you've been somewhere really good, however, it's going to feel like pretty small potatoes. Being so far south, they can't make snow as long as many as other resorts, but they do a decent job of getting the majority of the runs open by early January at the latest, even without natural snowfall. We live about 2 hours away, and this is our closest slope; it gets lots of skiiers from around VA, NC, the DC area, etc.

Will start my review by mentioning that this was my first time going skiing and being a little uninformed. But the employees and customer service did the worst job in assisting me to learn what I did not know.Came here for skiing only. Not knowing what should I get and what is that for. I bought the tickets for the ski lift and for boots and ski themselves. Being two people I paid over $200 dollar for 8 hours which we planned using to try to learn how to ski. When going to get our boots and skis nobody asked if it's our first time and nobody gave us some info on what would be better for us to do. Got all the needed equipment and went to get a locker for my belongings which costs $3 (additional to the amount already paid and is a one use only). Being excited about skiing, went further not even thinking about the whole amount spent which is insane. Got outside put my ski on and here we go - excitement went skiing without me. I tried several times skiing and my girlfriend did it once, all the time spent there was waiting not to get into the skilled skiers way which for a beginner was steep enough. So after 2 hours of tries we understood that we made a mistake and had to get some training first. Went back inside, found an employee, described our situation and tried to change the tickets for some training and the answer was that it's not possible. Being denied here we tried to get part of the money back since we did not use more than 3hours of time which was another unsuccessful try. All this just made us mad because there is no info saying that we can not change the tickets. All info posted is about the resort not being responsible for any person falling and hurting themselves that we could be part of if we continued practicing on our own. No employee was able to provide some useful information on what should be done.Called the resort one week later and talked to some customer service representative. The First person I talked to, placed me on hold and did not say that she is transferring my call. The Second wasn't able to help me and had to talk to her supervisor which did not take any action. Overall the ski resort is nice for anyone but a beginner. CUSTOMER SERVICE IS VERY BAD. Could go back if I knew to ski or was treated the right way. Fortunately for me Wintergreen is not the only ski resort but is obviously one of those places were money is more important than the customer.

Excellent accommodations and friendly, helpful staff. Chose a bad weather weekend, but had a ball anyway!

Although the ski conditions were not ideal due to the warm and rainy weather, the service and employees made the trip. The grounds were well kept, lines were minimal, food was good ext ext. What made stood out to my family was the friendly employees. Congrats on the training of all the foreign workers. Argentina, Jamaica, Chile were among a few that were represented. Tubing was a blast too!!! Thanks, and we will be back!!!

Loved everything about it view,food and condos.I took ski lessons had a great instructor and conquered the bunny slope before the weekend was over.

Reserve a ticket online before you go as they may be sold out. Hour and a half on tubing is just right. They set it up well and limiting the number of tubers ensures that there are no lines. Very fast and very fun. Go, but get your tickets before you get to the mountain.

I should note from the very start that we did not stay at the hotel/lodge while visiting the Wintergreen Ski Resort. We were attending the Reebok Spartan Super. I have to say though that the area is magnificent. Our drive through the surrounding country side was breathtaking. Wineries and local breweries are scattered throughout the area and give even more charm to a lovely area. Once at the top of the mountain, there appeared to be plenty of parking and the grounds were well kept. We had the opportunity to try some of the food from the lodge restaurant, and it was very good. Based on our brief experience at the Wintergreen Ski area, my family will definitely be making a trip back to stay at the lodge/hotel/condos/cabins and make use of the many ski slopes.

We recently visited Wintergreen Ski Resort. Beautiful Mountain Views and Sunrises. The room was so clean and very comfortable. A great retreat for a special occasion! We enjoyed wine tasting tours and dinner / music nearby. The resort itself needs to work on the restaurant. The food quality should match the price. Other than that we really enjoyed our visit.
