We recently went to Palo Duro Canyon to visit. We heard about the Jeep Tours that the Elkins Ranch have, conviently located right before the State Park Palo Duro Canyon entrance. We truly enjoyed this tour. We had signed up to to take the 3 hour tour, but because of recent rains they were not able to forge the river so the tour was cut to 2 hours. Our driver was an older gentleman named Don. He was the best..... he grew up as a young boy playing in the canyon all thru his high school years. He truly loved the Palo Duro Canyon and you could tell by the many stories he told about it. He was very informative about the canyon, it's history with the Indians, nature, the animals and plant life there. We saw a rattlesnake, roadrunner and beautiful views of the canyon. The jeep ride was fun and even included a roller coaster run at one point. The trucks were outfitted with pink paint, steer horns, and cow seat covers. It was cool even in July the morning we went. The orange sand was blowing and was really dusty, we needed showers afterwards. I would suggest bringing water and your camera for sure, maybe binoculars. I would also suggest asking for Don if he is available, you won't be dissappointed.
The jeep ride was OK, but the front seat belts didn't work - which added some worry to the jeep ride.
found this attraction on trip-advisor and loved it. The trip is in an open 4WD vehicle and the road is unpaved. Our guide, Nicole, was amazing, she was dedicated to teach, provided wonderful information about the history, geology and nature. The tour takes you around the private site of the canyon so is not available to the state park visitors.
We recommend a jeep tour to anyone who wants to see the Palo Duro Canyon without having to hike it. The tour complements what you can see from your car driving through the park, and the narration from the guide/driver broadens the experience.See the Palo Duro Canyon during the off season. We were told the place is overrun during the spring and summer.
Being at the park during the week in Nov. was a real positive. No crowds, good weather and a very relaxing tour. Nicole was our tour guide. She was very pleasant, informative and a good driver. The views were wonderful and we were able to get some great photos.
We took an abbreviated tour due to some heavy rains making the full 3 hour tour impossible. Our tour guide Nicole was very knowledgable and very accommodating of all our questions. The views were fantastic and she was more than willing to stop for pictures . We had been to the state park the day before but I learned more history of the canyon from Nicole . Reasonably priced! Well worth it.
This private ranch offers jeep tours of the canyon. Our tour which took us to the bottom of the ranch was ably led by James who tailored his talk and our travels to our interests. This tour take you through a much less traveled part of the canyon since its private and only allows jeep tourist in to visit. James covered the flora, fauna, history and geology with some breath taking views, and exhilarating ups and downs in the jeep. We took the 2.25 hr tour, but there is longer and shorter for the time or finance strapped. Worth every penny!
Awesome guided tour through the Palo Duro Canyon. The guide was first rate and provided informative and entertaining talk throughout the whole 2 hours. You got a real feel for the area over the centuries due to his knowledge. Very professional, yet just a fun day. Would recommended to any age group. We are middle age and it was just perfect but can imagine it would be fun for kiddos too.
