My sister and I went here during the winter, considering not much else in the area was open during this icy weather. While we couldn't get the outdoor tour of the vineyards, we did get a tour of the indoor grounds, along with generous pours of 6 different wines (11 options are available to choose from), plus an additional sample of one of the wines they have on reserve. I'm far from being a pretentious wine drinker, but to me it was one of the better selections of wines I've had at a vineyard. The girl who did the tastings and tour was very friendly and informative, and we had a great time! It was $10/6 wines, plus you get to keep your glass.
We love going to the Vinyard and then to be able to get a light lunch and enjoy the views. The wine is good -- especially the whites but that is a surprise so far up in New England. Well worth a trip.
Spectacular venue for weddings (we attended one last summer, one of the best ever). Carolyn's Sakonnet Vineyard is on the local Wine Trail - a nice, well-kept vineyard with a comfortable and interesting tasting room, cafe, and good coastal southern New England wines. In the summer they have great music on the lawn for $10/car load. Located in super-scenic Little Compton - you will be charmed by this seaside town and vineyard.
The Vineyard is very beautiful and the long drive into it is definitely worth going there for. I cannot say the same for the Wine, and when enquiring about their ice wine was told they artificial freeze the grape to make it. The lady behind testing bar reassure me that it taste the same as the one which was made from grape picked when they are naturally frozen. I would disagree with that assessment and the tasting confirms it. Therefore my rating has to be average on that basis.
Beautiful vineyard and gorgeous grounds but very, very mediocre wines. We stopped in for lunch and a tasting on a Tuesday afternoon only to discover that the cafe is closed on Tuesdays, a fact which husband's uncle & aunt, our tour guides, were unaware of. No matter, we were primarily here for wine so we headed straight for the tasting room. Our foursome was looking forward to trying their port, so we were disappointed to learn they were out of it. My husband and I are primarily red wine drinkers and we prefer medium-to-full-bodied reds (e.g., Malbec, Zinfandel & Cab Sauv), but we're up for trying anything. Most of the reds we sampled seemed a bit watery, and the whites too sweet. We decided to purchase a bottle of [overpriced] ice wine that we liked okay, but neither of us is any particular hurry to drink it. Our uncle & aunt are even more frequent, more knowledgeable wine drinkers than we are, so we breathed a sigh of relief when they divulged they shared our same "meh" opinion of the wines.I wish the cafe had been open because that would probably have redeemed our less-than-stellar wine tasting. Next summer we'll plan to stop in again - this time for a meal - and we won't be ordering any wine.
After hearing that the owner of Alex & Ani owned a vineyard, I had to check it out. After spending the weekend in Newport, my boyfriend and I decided to stop there on the way home. The grounds, the staff and the wines were amazing! My boyfriend also doesn't drink wine and this made him a wine lover! We cannot wait to come back!!
My wife and I live in the area (within 10 miles) so we visit here from time to time to purchase wine and/or grab a bite to eat. We've had some good experiences here; the staff is usually friendly, and the wine is quite good (at least the white wine anyway; reds leave a lot to be desired). So why the average review? Well, we just got tired of coming out and being tuned away! Sakonnet hosts a lot of private events; not sure why they feel the need to close down the entire HUGE property to the remaining customers, but that is their choice. What I feel they owe me as a customer is some warning - post the closure on your website (which we check), or at least at the head of the long driveway. Twice now we've driven by a OPEN/WELCOME sign only to find out we can't purchase a thing - if you ask me, this is the very definition of bad business.
We started with a great drive in the countryside to get to Little Compton and then had a great afternoon at the vineyard. The place couldnt be anymore picturesque. We ate outside at the cafe and then took the tour. Very informative and engaging tour guide. We then did the tasting room. A good deal for 6 pours and you keep the glass fo r$10. The Cabernet Franc is very good. If you like an ice style wine they have some to choose from. All and all a nice experience.
I recently moved to Rhode Island and am studying wine and thought it would be interesting to learn and try some RI wine. As I understand it the vineyards have been bought by Alex and Ani and it shows. What I mean by this is that it comes across as more of a money making tourist attraction rather than a serious winery. There is decent restaurant, new seating out next to the vines and regular entertainment. The actual wine tour was conducted by a very friendly young woman who actually didn't know very much about the subject of wine and vineyards and was relying on the fact that nobody knew any better. However she was very sweet and entertaining. The wines in the tasting itself were pretty poor and over priced. So I would recommend that you come here on a nice sunny day to hang out with your friends in a beautiful location, but don't come here for the wine or to learn anything about wine :-)
This vineyard is definitely a hidden gem! It was my second choice of vineyards to visit in Rhode Island and honestly, I enjoyed it much more than the other ones I stopped by. The grounds are so pretty and there are some amazing views. The pours during the wine tasting were generous and the guide Doug was very knowledgeable and friendly! Although the tour was not focused on the outside property, it did take you through the making and bottling of the wine. They allow you to wander the grounds on your own which is nice because it is quite large. But so very peaceful and serene. I would recommend stopping here, definitely worth your while. It was wonderful! :)
We took a ride on a Saturday(70 minutes) to explore the area. On the way to the vineyard my boyfriend decided he was hungry and wanted to eat before having a wine tasting. I called the vineyard to make sure the cafe was open, they told me it was and there were a few tables still available. I told them I was right down the road and would be there in five minutes. When we got there we were told there were no tables available. We decided to put our name in and have the wine tasting. We felt a little ignored at the tasting but the guys were kind of busy and we had already paid so we didn't have much choice but to muddle through. I enjoyed the dessert wine very much and intended to purchase a bottle after lunch. They have a few cute, gifty wine items and I wanted to look around after we dined. I was told to take any table that was empty. My boyfriend went to the car to get my jacket because it was a little chilly sitting outside. He came back and we sat for ten minutes before I went to the waitress stand to get menus. Not one staff member acknowledged that I was standing there. A group of six bikers came in as I was reading the menu and asked to have tables put together so they could eat. That was done pretty quickly, and when the waitress went over to take their order, I decided to leave. We sat for approximately 30 minutes without being acknowledged. We left without buying wine or lunch. Their loss.
Visited on a Saturday afternoon, approximately 4p. The place was very busy with lots of activity everywhere. The property is lovely with a long crushed stone driveway that winds and leads to the visitors center. The vast lawn is dotted with rustic wooden chairs/tables and there were many people and families sitting and enjoying their wine and picnic lunches on a leisurely afternoon. Music was playing from speakers in a barn and apparently they have/had a summer concert series there. The visitors center has a gift shop, plus a restaurant whereby you can enjoy your food outside, but I didn't pay much attention to this - although it smelled good! Tastings are $10 for six wines. The tasting area was a large rectangular bar and there were many bartenders. I was disappointed in the fact that you just selected the six wines that you wanted however no education was offered by the bartender. Perhaps because it was so busy? There was a wedding going on and guests were arriving, walking through the tasting room. Again, very hectic with activity and noisy. Wines were nicer than I remembered when I last visited ten years ago. Although I am a red wine drinker, the Vidal Blanc was my favorite. Petite White was a nice semi-dry blend, Blessed Blended White was smooth and not at all crisp, as the description read. 2012 Pinot Noir was extremely spicy, peppery and tannic even though the description indicated smooth tannins - not your typical Pinot Noir. Their "signature" Rhode Island Red is sweet. All in all, a nice experience, very decent sized pours and friendly staff. I would like to go back and do a tour.
Sakonnet Vineyards is tucked back off a road in quiet Little Compton, RI. Upon pulling up you immediately notice the many old rustic wooden chairs which look very inviting on a nice sunny day. We saw several people just hanging out enjoying a bottle of wine.Tastings here are $10 which is kinda pricy, IMO but cheaper than Newport and Greenvale vineyards on Aquidneck Island. You get to keep the glass as well. The place was hoppin' on a sunny Labor Day and we had to wait several minutes to squeeze into a small space at the small, rectangular tasting bar. With only 3 people working it sometimes took awhile to get your next pour, and eliminated any chance to casually converse with the staff or to ask questions about the wine, this was strictly a "pour and move on" operation, so a fair warning if you are looking to ask questions about their wines you would be disappointed. Maybe it's not always like that, but on a busy day I bet it usually is.However, the thing about this place is the HUGE pours! I'm not sure I have ever been to a winery in my many travels that gives out so much to try. The pours half filled an 8oz glass! Many places will charge more for a tiny pour using the stupid little stopper devices. That is NOT the case here! After your 6 wines you should feel the wine as you probably had about 2-3 servings. As for the wine, it's mostly dry to semi dry reds and whites here, along with a couple of dessert wines. You definitely get your $10 worth of wine here! They also have a restaurant which looked cute and had lots of people looking like they were enjoying a lunch.
Happened upon the winery after some time at the beach. Location is beautiful. You can see right out to the vineyards. Tastings are only $10 for 6 wines and you can keep the glass. Since they know everyone coming there is driving, they allow you to share tastes, which is fantastic. The Vidal blanc is the signature wine and it doesn't disappoint. There are tours, but we didn't make it in time to take one. There is a cute cafe and to a of places to chill with a picnic and some wine. Fun afternoon,
My wife and I along with two dear friends from Spain spent an incredibly wonderful afternoon at the Sakonnet Vineyard. Our day began with one of the best tours of any vineyard we have ever been to by a young lady named Trish. Not only was she extremely knowledgeable about all of the wines, but her charm and personality had us entertained throughout the tour. You can telll that she loves what she is doing and is able to convey in a delightful way, all the intricacies of wine making at Sakonnet. After the tour we were able to have our wine tasting (also by Trish .I guess they rotate) and loved the wines, particularly the Vidal Blanc…one of the many we enjoyed. Lunch at the vineyard was yummy and we enjoyed the cheese plate as well as the flatbread pizzas. After lunch and all that terrific wine, we thoroughly relaxed with some of the most comfortable chairs we ever sat on while enjoying the beautiful surroundings. There is no doubt we will return with more family and friends. Thanks Sakonnet Vineyards and thank you Trish for a memorable day.
