The staff were very friendly and helpful with the family history records that my husband and son needed. They were equally helpful with our visit for my self and my small grandson, to the museum itself. It's a great collection of local history, with artifacts, explanations, posters, and some audio as well. It's a small town treasure!

Located just across the square from the courthouse in downtown La Grange, Kentucky, the Oldham County History Center complex is comprised of a church building, a restored 1840's home containing a library and archives, and - the centerpiece - the Peyton Samuel Head Family Museum. Housed in a restored Victorian mansion, the museum is bursting with artifacts and information related to the history of La Grange and Oldham County. Special attention is given to local native son D.W. Griffith, as well as author Annie Fellows Johnston (writer of the "Little Colonel" novels). When it comes to local history museums, it's generally a hit or miss affair. The Oldham County History Center is most definitely in the latter category. The presentation of the material in the museum is first-rate, with modern aesthetics and an easy flow to the exhibits. The abundance of artifacts, and accompanying informative material, was fascinating. The museum's curator and staff really put forth a professional effort. The only drawback involves the lighting on the first floor of the museum. Not everything is well lit, making it a bit difficult to read some of the smaller print and text placed near the ceiling. That very minor gripe aside, this is definitely an attraction worth visiting when browsing of La Grange's unique boutiques.Admission to the museum is free, though a donation is encouraged. I, too, would encourage visitors to help support the center.
