the museum was closed...between exhibits....but because I had come so far I was given a guided tour of what was being put up. a Chinese artist that paints watercolor, mostly flowers and does sculpture also. and an exhibit of two teachers at Tulane in the early 1900's who used oil pastels as a medium as well as oils and watercolor. very nice exhibit...many impressionistic works.very nice of them to let me in and give me a 1/2 tour. thanks!
This was a new experience for my family. Just when you thought you found all entertainment in this unique city, a jewel appears. As we were riding around the city of Alexandria looking for something to do,... bam!! There it was, the most unique building I've seen in this awesome city, The Alexandria Museum of Art. As we entered we were expecting a usual run of the mill small town museum. To our surprise, the museum was so entertaining with it's permanant collection of rotating art exhibitions. It also had traveling art exhibitions and exceptional contemporary art. We were so surprised and excited and entertained, for have chosen this venue for a surprise visit. Compares to many of the big city museums I've visited. As for as the admission, $4 is definately a bargain for a different view of Alexandria. A must see if you are traveling to Alexandria Louisiana.
We were looking for something to do on a rainy afternoon. For the four dollar admission each, my husband and I who are not into art that much, learned a great deal about the artists featured at the time we went. It was enjoyable and worth eight dollars. Outside the museum is a beautiful friver walk and picnic area on the Red river. Kids may be bored inside but can run outside!
What a beautiful facility practically on the banks of the Red River (behind the levee, of course!).We enjoyed our visit and the receptionist was very friendly. HIghly recommended if you're an art lover.......even if you're not, there will be something to strike your fancy.
very wide range of art and styles for the size of the town and museum, special events well done . staff friendly, usually well informed
Must see when visiting Central Louisiana. Permanent and traveling exhibits. Lots of educational offerings. Every 2nd Sat., there are special art/craft vendors selling their wares. Great gift shop, all original art purchases are tax free.
So many art museums are stuffy and pretentious, but this one was comfortable and informal in a modern venue. The staff were welcoming, informative, and unobtrusive. The museum displayed a variety of art forms, perhaps more of paintings than others. They exhibited art from a variety of places, including regional artists. Based on information at the reception desk and the website, exhibits change fairly often. The museum appears to want to encourage art appreciation in the community, rather than demonstrating a condescending superior attitude. The gift shop was small but nice. There was plenty of parking nearby. Very modest fee of $4 for adults, less for seniors and students.
