This small Museum is all about Tilghman Island, The docents were friendly and knowledgeable. They are getting ready to move into larger quarters in a restored house and will have more room to show their treasurers. if you are lucky, some of the local watermen will be there to regale you with stories of their life on the water.
The Museum has artifacts, articles, and other memoribilia about how the watermen have made their living though the decades. There are great photos of how the island used to look, too.
This is a labour of love set up, funded and operated by a dedicated group of volunteers. They have a new (old) building which is also unique to the area , currently being renovated to house the museum. It won't take you long to have a look around and get a bit more understanding of that lifestyle. The collection is a real mixed bag of items which all together tell a great tale. It would be a shame to be there and not take the time to have a look and chat.....it won't cost you either!
We stopped briefly before lunch. It's a small collection of maritime stuff. They're moving to an historic home soon. Today, they were hosting a Pleinaire Arts festival session, so there were artists painting and sketching all over town
We have been supporters of this project from the beginning and are delighted with the progress. This museum will depict the rich history of the waterman that work so hard on this little island in the middle of the Chesapeake. This is a must see when on TI.
I remember being impressed and wishing I could stay longer in this little building with all the interesting stuff!
A delightful little find on our trip to Tilghman Island. The EXCELLENT staff of the museum shared stories, history, and gave us wonderful insight into the island. A GEM of a place!! So glad that they are making the effort to preserve the history of this island!
A little slow for the kids, but interesting none the less. We liked the part about how you could catch the crabs and oysters.
