This attraction is also known as Eldorado Canyon Mine Tours.This tour of the remains of a ghost town and the old gold mine is well worth a trip from Vegas - get away from the flashy lights and glitz and see something REAL! We were concerned there might not be a tour when we called in the morning, since they need at least 4, but we needn't have worried, there were several others there when we arrived, and this on a February Thursday.The tour guide looks and sounds like a proper old country boy, but he and his partners bought the mine a few decades back to run as an attraction, so he's no ex-miner.The tour starts a bit slowly, with some history of the area and the mine, told mainly with the use of photos hung on the wall of the shop/reception. However, there are some fascinating and occasionally gruesome tales he has to tell, so you're quickly drawn in.That done, you head off towards one of the old mine shafts. You walk past the buildings (more like sheds) that hold the old machinery, but sadly cannot go in, I guess they are either too unstable or too dangerous from arsenic residue.The mine itself is the highlight. You go in through a ramshackle entrance to the side of a mountain; once you get to the seam you can see how the whole thing is carved out. The mine is adequately lit, although at one point in the tour the guide turned all the lights out save for one candle, to show us how much light the miners would have had to work. The place is eerie enough, but enhanced further by the odd (dummy) skeleton placed in there, and the guide's ghost story.Back in the light, I could hang around the reception and surrounding old buildings all day. The owners have filled the area with endless old relics, and there is something different to see wherever you turn. As you leave the restroom you are confronted with a bedroom full of alien mannequins. There are more rusted-out old cars than I have ever seen, and even the remains of an old plane (a prop used when 3000 Miles to Graceland was filmed there) staged to look like it crashed into the mountain.

If you have a couple of hours, this place is great. You can go down in the mine, tours leave 4 times a day. Then there is the old town across the street from the mine that you can tour and get a feel for the general history of the area. A few miles east of town, the road ends and you are at the Colorado River just south of Hoover Dam. Beautiful overlook and river access to carry things in and boat or swim.

During our last visit to Las Vegas from Arkansas we decided to go on a horseback ride. We called the concierge at Caesars Palace where we stayed and told him what we wanted to do so he recommended this tour company. We were ready for a little outdoor relaxation away from the hustle and bustle of the casinos. We were picked up at the hotel and taken to an old ghost town that was updated on the inside but rustic and realistic outside. The old cars and trucks parked around the property were all strategically placed to look like they had been abandoned where they were. The barns were all full of old relics of days past that by the way would take days or weeks to see them all. The property as a whole is wonderful and inviting. The employees were all very accommodating and friendly. The stories of all the history of the events that surround the place are interesting. The gold mine tour is fun and informative. Finally the horseback tour that we went for was the highlight of our vegas trip. Our guide was great. I think his name was Jerry, his stories of the area were very interesting. He was very knowledgeable and gracious. He made everyone on our ride feel comfortable and safe. He took the time to take pictures with everyone's cameras which were very good! We would recommend this tour to anyone wanting to get away and relax. On our next visit to vegas we will go back! Thank you to everyone on the property for a great experience!

We arrived by helicopter as part of a package we had booked. The tour guide was waiting in an atv.We then went quad biking followed by a tour of the shop surrounding area and the mine.Our tour guide was fantastic and very knowledgable.Lunch was provided and we were taken back to Las Vegas after the tour, even on route to the hotel our guide still provided us with more information about the area.

More picture opportunities than you will have time for! Take the day pack a lunch enjoy the fresh air and learn about the goldmine- take the extra time to go to the Colorado River! Enjoy

Three additional photographers and I spent over three hours wandering this photogenic property on Saturday 10/27/2014. The antique cars and trucks, buildings, signs, antique signs, and more added up to a great photo adventure for the four of us. We took our lunches, and enjoyed the clouds and sunshine. A wedding was being setup, so one might think of this destination for other events and parties, not just a mine tour.

If you like off the beaten path places this is a good place for you. It was in the middle of nowhere. Did not do the tour but stopped at the store and talked to the owner for a spell. I could not believe all the movies, videos and foto shoots that they have done there. It was quite impressive. Worth the drive!

Totally worth the drive. A gem in the middle of nowhere. The owners who live in this ghost town are really nice and friendly. Beware of snakes so watch where you step. So many old treasures kept in its original form and the grounds are very well taken cared of. Loved it here. Great place to take a lot of photos

We loved the rustic resting that this property offered. It was a bit of history left there for everyone to enjoy!

Tuesday, July 22, 2014Techatticup MineTechatticup, translates to “hungry” or “want food” in Paiute. So, how does that translate into a gold mine name? When first discovered in the early 1860’s by John Moss, the prospectors were led by a group of Paiutes who showed the gold bearing quartz to the men, and asked to be fed. Thus, Techatticup became the name of one of the richest and still viable gold mines in the Nevada region.Tony and Bobbie Werly now own the mine and much of the land you see around it when you arrive at the very distinct and obvious mine just east of downtown Nelson, NV. One will see numerous antique and rusted out vehicles sitting around the property; a few ‘visible’ gasoline dispensers; lots of mining equipment from the years that the mine was productive; and a few fuselages of old US Navy airplanes.Bobbie Werly was my tour guides for the approximate one hour tour of the underground mine. Though you do not travel off of the entry level, up or down, one is able to view much of the workings of the mine horizontally and a few hundred feet vertically. The mine was a cool 65⁰F while in the mine workings, with a nice breeze, very different than the 106⁰F outside.The mine tour takes approximately one hour, and is preceded by a short history of the mine, and the area. Take your time, as the trip is quite worth it. Plan on a couple of hours, or more if you are a photographer, novice or professional; as there are plenty of spots to take photos of all sorts of mining and antiques outside, and in the several barns around the property. The mine and the surrounding area are used by movie companies and other artists as backdrops for their works.

My son arranged a tour of the Techatticup Gold Mine just south of Las Vegas for us. It was terrific! They had all kinds of antiques and relics there. The guide was very knowledgeable and helpful. It was very interesting to actually go deep inside the mountain where so much gold had been dug out of. We had a great time on the tour which lasted a little over an hour. Then we were able to walk all over and take pictures. Several movies have been filmed there. I highly recommend this for anyone's bucket list!

What an interesting history lesson we had here. The mine tour time didn't coordinate with our schedule, but it looked interesting. We did, however, enjoy wandering the grounds, examining the artifacts inside, and learning about the history of this area. A great place for photographers!

If you are looking for some wonderful Nevada history, this is a great place to go! Took a trip to Nelson, NV with our Girl Scout Troop, arrived for our tour at the old Techatticup Mine, and felt like we stepped back into the early 1900's. The family that purchased the land has only owned it for a few years and have already done wonderful things. I look forward to visiting again in another year or two and see how they have improved. The whole thing is family owned and operated, which is the best way to go. The gentleman leading the tours Joe Beck (the owners son) and Billy (friend of the family, I think?) are hilarious as well as informative, they keep you on your toes in the mine. They know the history as well as some of the stories that come from the mining days. The tour is only about 40 minutes altogether, but it's well worth the time and the money. It is definitely one of the best things I've done in Vegas so far. Once you are done with the tour, Lake Mojave is not far from Nelson where you can launch jetski's or canoes for some time on the water. They will even rent them to you right there at the mine. They also offer horseback rides. Peruse the acreage and see all that there is to offer, lots of great photo opportunities, there was a professional photo shoot going on the day we were there, they have also had many celebrities come shoot album covers, and there have been several movies that show Nelson, NV. They recently had a crew there shooting a new thriller there. Highly recommended.

We booked a horse riding adventure on the internet for use when we visited Las Vegas. We were extremely fortunate that it was at this location!We arrived at 9:00 AM, wondering if we had made a wrong turn...The site was actually an old mine site that had been abandoned years before. We made our way into the store and we were greeted by a large, bearded fellow who was to be our guide that day. Billy was his name and a great guide and a wealth of information he was! We signed the prerequisite forms and headed to the corral down the road where we met our horses. Our horses, a paint and a white mustang were well behaved and most obliging. Our 2 hour tour of the Eldorado Valley and the surrounding area was very interesting and we were amazed by the wealth of knowledge, and the patience, shown by our guide. Beautiful flowering cacti, yellow flowering shrubs and numerous lizards scurrying everywhere were the order of the day. Luckily we didn't see any of the Mojave green rattlesnakes that we were warned about. The time went quickly and we soon found ourselves back at the 'store' after putting our horses back in the corral.A box lunch was then handed out, that was most enjoyable after a ride in the valley! Then it was time to wander about and enjoy the sights. After a few minutes I returned to the car and got my camera out. What an opportunity for an amateur photographer! Old cars! Older trucks! Old antiquated mining gear! Old freight wagons! A wrecked airplane crashed into a hill! Old buildings! You name it and you'll find it here! I spent more time taking pictures than I did riding!Then there is the Mine tour! As someone who's worked in the mining industry for 30 years, I was impressed at how hard the old miners worked to open these mines! The mine was opened in 1881 and the shaft is about 900 feet deep. That's not much by today's standards, but impressive for the time. I understand that at one time it was the largest producer of gold in Nevada!Our tour over we spent some time in the store. This is an adventure in itself! Stuffed animals. Books of photographs showing all sorts of different things. Rattlesnakes, injuries due to misadventures with cacti and all other sorts of things. Preserved remains of 'Aliens' were of interest to everyone! We were very fortunate thatt he owner, Tony, was in the store at the time of our visit. His plans for the future of this site is most impressive. He, and his Staff, take whatever time is necessary to ensure they answer all your questions and that your visit is most enjoyable. And the prices for souvenirs at the store are extremely reasonable. One item that we purchased was small tubes of actual gold for $4. Interesting in that we saw the same item at other places selling for $10. T shirts are similarly reasonably priced.All in all, this was the best investment of time and money that we made while in the Las Vegas area! And we didn't even do everything we could have! They have kayaking, river tours, ATV trail riding, horseback riding, mine tours and probably more by the time you read this! I'd recommend a visit here for anyone who enjoys history, outdoor fun or just getting away from the 'lights' of Vegas. And whatever you do..... don't forget your camera!
